It gives me immense pleasure to know that the World Bamboo Organization, in association with Government of Nagaland is going to observe the World Bamboo Day along with the North East International Bamboo Festival from 16th to 18th September 2010 at Kisama, Kohima in Nagaland. I am sure that the festival will help in spreading the message of World Bamboo Day, which aims to generate overall awareness on bamboo in the society, its potential, avenues and awareness of the much needed efforts towards improving rural economy through the use of this green gold.

The North East is known for its vast resource of Bamboos, which are evenly spread out throughout the region. Bamboo has been an integral part of life of the people of North East since times immemorial. It is used for construction of dwellings, furniture, weapons and decorative items in addition to its use in rituals. The indigenous people are known for their expertise in bamboo craft. There is no doubt that bamboo plays an important part in the life of North East communities. And with the celebration of important Days, like the World Bamboo Day in the region, the much needed requirement of value addition to this invaluable resource and its use for augmentation of the people's income will be addressed. I am sure that important factors, i.e. research and development, plantation development, handicrafts development and marketing will be taken up in a big way.

Nagaland, renowned for its rich traditional heritage is a cultural mosaic and its natural beauty, hospitality and friendliness of its people will definitely ensure a memorable experience for all the participants.
