It is a great pleasure to know that the World Bamboo Day celebration along with the North East International Bamboo Festival is being organized by the Govt. of Nagaland and the World Bamboo Organization at Kisama, Nagaland during 16th to 18th Sept. 2010. On this auspicious occasion, the CBTC is bringing out a special issue of the newsletter - C & B News - focusing the activities and achievements of the concerned state department in the implementation of the National Bamboo Mission in this part of the country.

The National Bamboo Mission was launched by the Govt. of India in 2006 and it is being implemented by the Horticulture Division of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC), Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India. Bamboo being found abundantly in the North Eastern region wherein 54 per cent of India's bamboo resources are located, the region has been the main focus of the mission. The CBTC has been greatly instrumental in the implementation of the National Bamboo Mission as a Bamboo Technical Support Group

(BTSG) and I fervently hope that this publication will be very helpful in giving us an insight on the progress made in the bamboo sector for the region.

Nagaland is one state that is leading the bamboo sector in India and it has taken up the resource as one of the prime commodity for livelihood support in the state. The Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre (NBRC) in Dimapur is an unique centre wherein different applications of bamboo has been initiated by the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency. It is good to know that the State is organizing the World Bamboo Day-cum-NE International Bamboo Festival, 2010.

I wish the publication a success.

U. K. Sangma

I am glad to know that the World Bamboo Day as well as the North East International Bamboo Festival are being celebrated under the joint initiative of the Government of Nagaland and the World Bamboo Organization at Kisama in Nagaland during 16th - 18th September,
2010.

Bamboo is one of the natural resources abundantly found in the NE region of India. However, its potential has not been fully realized for economic development of the country. In order to promote the holistic development of bamboo, the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Government of India launched a centrally sponsored scheme on "National Bamboo Mission" during 2006-07 in the country.

The State of Nagaland is performing better in the implementation of the National Bamboo Mission both in forest and non forest areas and is one of the leading states in the bamboo sector in the region. The celebration of World Bamboo Day and North East International Banlboo Festival will not only generate mass awareness but it will also help farmers to earn their livelihood through the promotion of Bamboo Sector in the region.

I wish a grand success to these events.

World Bamboo Day, 2010 & N E International Bamboo Festival

World Bamboo Day, 2010 & North East International Bamboo Festival, Kisama, Nagaland

World Bamboo Day was declared in 2009 bythe Thai Royal Forest Department on 18th September in Bangkok, during the 8th World Bamboo Congress. This declaration is an effort to increase the awareness of bamboo globally. Where bamboo grows naturally, bamboo has been a daily element, but its utilization has not always been sustainable due to exploitation.

The World Bamboo Organization aims to elevate the potential of bamboo via international exposure and promotion - to protect natural resources and the environment, to ensure sustainable utilization, to promote new cultivation of bamboo for new industries, i.e. bio-fuel, bio-plastics, carbon credits, etc., as well as promote traditional uses locally to improve community economic development and livelihood.

This year the WBO promotes the celebration of this day around the world, with participation from bamboo enthusiasts, practitioners, researchers, students, children = everyone! A key event will be held at Kisama, a beautiful village near Kohima, Nagaland in India endorsed by WBO and hosted by the Government of Nagaland, India.

With an aim to spread the message of World Bamboo Dod and to generate overall awareness on bamboo in the society and economy, BAMBOO FOR LIVELIHOOD AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT has been selected as the theme of the event. Expected to be attended by over 200 participants from around the world, the celebrations and festival will be graced by members of WBO, high level policy makers from the Government of India and the North Eastern states, and officials, ambassadors and high commissioners from the ASEAN countries.

The celebrations will also feature the North East International Bamboo Festival starting from 16th September in addition to showcasing the achievements of National Bamboo Missie-(NBM) in the country especially in the North Eastern pa-z of the nation. In Nagaland, activities relating to Nation Bamboo Mission are being implemented through the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA), who will also play host to the World Bamboo Day 2010.

Lalthanhawla, Chief Minister, Mizoram (September 2010)

I am glad to know that the Government of Nagaland in association with World Bamboo Mission is organizing a celebration of the World Bamboo Day along with the North East International Bamboo Festival from 16th-18th September 2010, and that the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre is endeavouring to bring out a special issue of its newsletter (C&B Newsletter) to mark the occasion.

Holding the international bamboo festival in North East India, a region where we find abundant bamboo resources, is truly apt and very reassuring. Bamboo holds a lot of promise to all sections of the society, ranging from unskilled labourers to adept craftsmen, small scale industries to corporate entities, even though its full potential in generating employment is yet to be harnessed. This valuable resource can also be utilized for addressing the problem of rapid depletion of forests and its versatility offers a wide range of industrial applications.

The festival will provide an excellent platform for showcasing cutting edge technologies and bamboo products, whereby the participants can benefit from the unique exposure. I am sure the deliberations and exchange of views among the participants will evolve ideas for sustainable management and utilization of this versatile resource for the socio-economic improvement of the region.

I convey my best wishes to all the participants and I wish the World Bamboo Day celebration with the North East International Bamboo Festival grand success.
