I am happy to learn that World Bamboo Day and the North East International Bamboo Festival is being celebrated in Nagaland from 16th-18th September, 2010 under the aegis of the Government of Nagaland and the World Bamboo Organization. I understand that the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC) is bringing out a Special Edition of its newsletter - C & B News - to mark the occasion

The North Eastern Region is endowed with abundant bamboo resources and continuous efforts are being made at various levels to harness these by infusing technology to develop myriad bamboo based products. The launch of the National Bamboo Mission in the Region is expected to augment the bamboo sector with the primary objectives of self sufficiency and sustainability.

It is encouraging to note that the Government of Nagaland has taken this initiative to organize the Festival in association with the World Bamboo Organization. I am hopeful that the Festival will generate adequate awareness among different sections of the people including entrepreneurs, technologists, activists, farmers and the general public in focusing on the development of the bamboo sector towards ensuring greater socio-economic welfare. I also hope that the C & B News with its focus on the activities and achievements of the National Bamboo Mission in the North Eastern Region would immensely benefit all the stakeholders.

I wish the event and the publication a grand success.

It gives me immense delight to know that World Bamboo Day is being celebrated along with the Norh-East International Bamboo Festival from 16th to 18th September, 2010 at Kisama in Nagaland. On this occasion, Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC) is bringing out a special news letter.

The National Bamboo Mission, launched by the Government of India in 2006 has given a fresh lease of life to many whose livelihoods depend on the bamboo sector. Combining technology with traditional techniques, the Mission seeks to lend support in marketing of the bamboo handicrafts. Thus, besides creating avenues of employment and entrepreneurship, the Mission also ensues preservation of traditional skills.

I have every hope that this World Bamboo Day celebrated will be a grand success. My best wishes are with you.

I am glad to know that the Cane & Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC), Guwahati is bringing out a special issue of its newsletter on the occasion of the celebration of the World Bamboo Day and the North East International Bamboo Festival between 16 and 18 September 2010 at Kisama (Kohima), Nagaland. It is appropriate that the Festival is being held in Nagaland for it is the largest producer of bamboo in the country with about 5% of the country's growing bamboo stock.

Bamboo, on its part, is an asset to the North East because of its multiple qualities. Apart from it having edible property and utility as fuel, it is used in construction of dwelling units, in irrigation and in fabricating musical instruments. With about 46 bamboo species identified in the state covering an area of over 48,000 hectares, Nagaland has come on the World Bamboo map. But despite its obvious value, its potential has not been fully exploited by the region. The celebrations will, hopefully, help realize this potential in a manner that will lead to economic growth and development of the state and the region.

I wish the CBTC all success in their endeavour to promote bamboo usage in the entire North East.

I am happy to learn that World Bamboo Day is being celebrated along with the North East International Bamboo Festival from 16th to 18th September 2010 at Kohima, Nagaland. I convey my appreciation to the organizers for selecting "Bamboo for Livelihood and Community Development" as the theme of the festival. North East India has abundant bamboo resource. 65% of bamboo in the country and 20% of the world are grown in the region. Bamboo therefore has a big potential for generating revenue and employment for North East India. I am confident that celebration of World Bamboo Day and the North East International Bamboo Festival will create greater awareness on the rich dividend that could be accrued from developing

bamboo.

The bamboo plant is integral to the development of the north eastern region of India since it is an effective means of livelihood for the rural poor by providing an opportunity for employment and income generation. The Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre deserves to be commended for its endeavours in promoting, developing and disseminating technologies. I am glad to know that the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre is bringing out a special issue of C&B News Letter with focus on the theme "Bamboo for Livelihood and Community Development", coinciding with the celebration of the World Bamboo Day alongwith the North-East International Bamboo Festival, 16-18 September 2010 at Kisama, Kohima, Nagaland.

For the last one decade, Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre has played a pioneering role in popularizing "bamboo" as a means of enhancing people's livelihood through employment generation and also as a vehicle of sustainable development. Besides having a great economic potential, cane and bamboo has immense cultural significance, particularly for the people of North-Eastern region.

It gives me immense pleasure to know that the World Bamboo Organization, in association with Government of Nagaland is going to observe the World Bamboo Day along with the North East International Bamboo Festival from 16th to 18th September 2010 at Kisama, Kohima in Nagaland. I am sure that the festival will help in spreading the message of World Bamboo Day, which aims to generate overall awareness on bamboo in the society, its potential, avenues and awareness of the much needed efforts towards improving rural economy through the use of this green gold.

The North East is known for its vast resource of Bamboos, which are evenly spread out throughout the region. Bamboo has been an integral part of life of the people of North East since times immemorial. It is used for construction of dwellings, furniture, weapons and decorative items in addition to its use in rituals. The indigenous people are known for their expertise in bamboo craft. There is no doubt that bamboo plays an important part in the life of North East communities. And with the celebration of important Days, like the World Bamboo Day in the region, the much needed requirement of value addition to this invaluable resource and its use for augmentation of the people's income will be addressed. I am sure that important factors, i.e. research and development, plantation development, handicrafts development and marketing will be taken up in a big way.

Nagaland, renowned for its rich traditional heritage is a cultural mosaic and its natural beauty, hospitality and friendliness of its people will definitely ensure a memorable experience for all the participants.

I, on behalf of the people of Arunachal Pradesh and on my own behalf extend my best wishes for the successful conduct of the event.
