It is a great pleasure to know that the World Bamboo Day celebration along with the North East International Bamboo Festival is being organized by the Govt. of Nagaland and the World Bamboo Organization at Kisama, Nagaland during 16th to 18th Sept. 2010. On this auspicious occasion, the CBTC is bringing out a special issue of the newsletter - C & B News - focusing the activities and achievements of the concerned state department in the implementation of the National Bamboo Mission in this part of the country.
The National Bamboo Mission was launched by the Govt. of India in 2006 and it is being implemented by the Horticulture Division of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC), Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India. Bamboo being found abundantly in the North Eastern region wherein 54 per cent of India's bamboo resources are located, the region has been the main focus of the mission. The CBTC has been greatly instrumental in the implementation of the National Bamboo Mission as a Bamboo Technical Support Group
(BTSG) and I fervently hope that this publication will be very helpful in giving us an insight on the progress made in the bamboo sector for the region.
Nagaland is one state that is leading the bamboo sector in India and it has taken up the resource as one of the prime commodity for livelihood support in the state. The Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre (NBRC) in Dimapur is an unique centre wherein different applications of bamboo has been initiated by the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency. It is good to know that the State is organizing the World Bamboo Day-cum-NE International Bamboo Festival, 2010.
I wish the publication a success.
